Question

Challenge

  • Following the merger of MTAA Super and Tasplan, Spirit Super (now known as CareSuper) identified the need to streamline and modernize its digital operations across multiple platforms and teams.
  • Managing website performance became increasingly complex due to fragmented roles across internal teams and external providers.
  • Marketing initiatives were delayed as change implementation relied heavily on third parties, creating bottlenecks and reducing responsiveness. A lean internal IT team needed greater control and autonomy to drive innovation and respond faster to member and business needs.
  • Evaluating options for upgrading Sitecore revealed fragmented and high-friction pathways—such as hiring agencies, relying solely on internal capacity, or outsourcing to generic cloud providers.
  • Long development cycles and limited DevOps maturity highlighted the need for improved processes and platform agility.

Solution

  • Adopted Fusion for Sitecore to unify infrastructure, security, DevOps, and upgrade management within a single, automated solution.
  • Reduced dependency on external providers by providing clear governance, visibility, and collaboration frameworks between Spirit Super’s teams and agency partners.
  • Introduced a hybrid architecture that allowed Spirit Super to fully leverage their current Sitecore PaaS platform, migrating from Sitecore XP to XM and introduction of composable products to future proof for potential future migration to Sitecore XM Cloud.

Outcome

  • Delivered a stable, high-performing Sitecore ecosystem with continuous availability and full feature enablement.
  • 50% reduction in load time and zero downtime during deployments, improving member experience and platform reliability.
  • Infrastructure management was simplified, allowing internal teams to focus on innovation and business value rather than technical maintenance.
  • The platform meets APRA industry security standards, ensuring secure and compliant handling of data.
  • Improved cross-team collaboration and digital agency alignment, driving faster delivery and better outcomes.
  • Increased agility, productivity, and confidence across internal teams, creating a strong foundation for ongoing digital transformation and growth.

For Spirit Super, ensuring a smooth and efficient digital experience was vital in delivering exceptional service to its members—especially following the merger of MTAA Super and Tasplan in 2021. The union of these organizations created a unique opportunity to reassess and optimize digital operations to support future growth.

The Challenge

The decision to upgrade: Upgrading Sitecore came with complex choices from hiring agencies to trying to roll this project out internally. Each path presented risks, costs, and fragmentation. Spirit Super needed a simple, unified solution—leading them to seek alternative options that could meet their requirements.

Post-Merger Complexity: With the merger came a more complex digital landscape. Spirit Super’s team recognized the need to unify systems, improve governance, and create an environment where digital teams could move faster and more confidently.

Operational Bottlenecks: Despite having a capable internal IT team, delays were common due to external dependencies and unclear responsibilities across infrastructure and application layers. Long development timelines and collaboration challenges across teams limited their ability to deliver change efficiently.

Room for Growth: Rather than viewing these challenges as setbacks, Spirit Super embraced the opportunity to modernize their digital delivery. Their team was eager to evolve DevOps processes, enhance infrastructure visibility, and take greater ownership of Sitecore to drive value across the business.

Our IT team had been struggling with some DevOps processes. They sat down with Dataweavers and were able to get some really simple ways to solve their problems – which we’ve been able to implement across the business.
